The Brandon IRS Missing Children Investigation

The Brandon Residential School Missing Children Investigation is led by Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, and is dedicated to supporting survivors and honoring the children who never made it home

Brandon Residential School

The Brandon Residential School, located five kilometers northwest of Brandon Manitoba,  operated from 1895 to 1972. It was initially run by the Methodist Church in 1895 to 1925, then by the United Church of Canada from 1925 to 1969. In its final years from 1969 to 1972, the school was managed by the federal government of Canada and operated by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. ​​

School Curriculum

Focused on vocational training. Farming for boys and domestic skills for girls.

Buildings

Originally, there was a three-story brick building, but 1930, a larger institute complex was constructed  with several outbuildings, barns, and storage sheds.

Attendance

Children were taken from many communities in Northern Manitoba, Central Saskatchewan, Southwestern Ontario as well as Sioux Valley Dakota Nation

18 Sites Under Investigation

These sites have been identified through archival research, geophysical surveying, forensic scene searches and survivor testimonies

21 Impacted Communities

Based on current archival research, there are 21 communities that lost children in association with the BIRS
